Prato recycled wool seeks European IGP status

Representatives from the Tuscany region and the Prato textile district met in Brussels to promote the pursuit of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI/IGP) status for ‘Cardato Riciclato Pratese’ (Prato recycled carded wool).

If granted, this recognition would make the recycled wool the first non-food product to hold the IGP label. The initiative, held at the Tuscany Region's Brussels headquarters during the European Week of Regions and Cities, aims to highlight the district's long-standing commitment to the circular economy. The process involves transforming textile scraps and rags into high-quality, competitive fabrics using modern technology.

Tuscan President Eugenio Giani and other regional officials emphasized that the move leverages new European regulations that extend geographical indications to artisanal and industrial products. The Prato textile supply chain, which supports over 5,000 employees, seeks to protect its historical craftsmanship and artisanal intelligence while positioning itself as a sustainable model for global brands.
