Prayer timing calculations in France vary by method and school

Prayer schedules in French cities such as Angers and Toulouse are determined by astronomical calculations and religious jurisprudence, leading to variations in timing.

The timing for the Asr prayer depends on the madhhab followed. In the Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools, Asr begins when an object's shadow reaches its own height plus the shadow at noon. In the Hanafi school, the threshold is double that height, which can cause a difference of up to an hour in winter.

For Fajr and Isha, timing is dictated by the twilight angle used in astronomical calculations rather than the madhhab. Common angles used in France include 15 and 18 degrees, though other conventions like those from the Turkish Diyanet or the North American ISNA also exist. Using different angles can significantly shift prayer times, particularly during summer months. Discrepancies in these angles, such as the use of a 12-degree angle, can have practical implications for religious observances like Ramadan.
