Silver prices fluctuate amid rising U.S. interest rate expectations

Precious metals, particularly silver, have experienced significant volatility driven by U.S. inflation data and monetary policy expectations. Following a hotter-than-expected Producer Price Index (PPI) report, which showed a 5.4% year-over-year increase, silver prices faced downward pressure as markets priced in a higher probability of Federal Reserve interest rate hikes.

Silver prices saw sharp fluctuations, at times dropping nearly 5% before attempting to rebound. While the initial reaction to inflation data strengthened the U.S. Dollar, subsequent movements saw silver recover some ground as investors weighed the potential for a more moderate Consumer Price Index (CPI) report.

Geopolitical tensions also play a role in market sentiment. Escalating U.S.-Iran tensions and conflict in the Red Sea, including the seizure of the port of Mokha by Houthi forces, have influenced energy costs and safe-haven demand. Analysts note that while geopolitical risks can support precious metals, the rising opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets due to high interest rates remains a primary headwind.
