Gold and oil markets react to geopolitical tensions and Fed expectations

Global commodity markets are experiencing volatility driven by Middle East tensions and expectations regarding Federal Reserve monetary policy. Brent crude oil prices have approached $110 per barrel, fueled by geopolitical risks in the Red Sea and reported threats to Saudi Arabian energy infrastructure. Houthi forces have claimed responsibility for attacks using ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones against Saudi Arabia.

Gold prices have declined for four consecutive trading days, with spot gold trading near $4,124 per ounce. This downward trend is attributed to rising oil prices stoking inflation concerns, which in turn increases the likelihood of sustained high interest rates. Additionally, a stabilizing US dollar index has limited demand for the precious metal.

Market participants are closely monitoring the Federal Reserve's upcoming meeting on October 27-28. While economists largely expect rates to remain steady in October, CME FedWatch data indicates a 16% probability of a rate hike during the October meeting and a 90% probability of a hike in December.
