Precision fermentation could reduce milk land use by 96%

A study published in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems suggests that precision fermentation could reduce the land required for milk production by up to 96% compared to traditional dairy farming.

Precision fermentation utilizes genetically engineered microbes, such as yeast or fungi, to produce proteins that are identical or very similar to those found in cow's milk. These proteins are then combined with plant-based fats, sugars, vitamins, and minerals to create products that mimic the nutritional profile of dairy without the use of livestock. These alternatives are naturally free of lactose and cholesterol.

Researchers from Imperial College London focused their analysis on the United Kingdom. They estimated that replacing just 20% of the UK's annual milk production with precision fermentation could free up approximately 859,000 hectares of land. This technology aims to address the environmental burden of animal agriculture, which currently occupies a significant portion of habitable land while providing only about 17% of global calories and one-third of protein consumption.
