Precision sensor technology advances hydrogen economy measurement

New advancements in sensor technology are addressing critical measurement challenges within the emerging hydrogen economy. Because hydrogen is the world’s lightest gas, it is highly sensitive to changes in pressure and temperature, making precise measurement of its energy density and mass flow difficult with existing instruments.

Research involving SINTEF and Cignus Instruments has focused on developing sensors capable of registering individual molecules to ensure accurate accounting for trade and production. Precise measurement is essential for the green transition, as even minor contamination or fluctuations can lead to significant overestimations of energy content.

In parallel, companies like VEGA are developing specialized measurement portfolios to support the hydrogen value chain, including production, storage, and distribution. These technologies include hydrogen-compatible stainless-steel pressure sensors and cryogenic monitoring to manage the risks of leakage, diffusion, and high flammability associated with hydrogen use in heavy industry and transport.
