Prediction markets face scrutiny over gambling addiction risks
A case involving a young man in Utah has raised concerns regarding whether prediction markets act as a gateway for individuals struggling with gambling addiction. After previously losing over $100,000 on sports betting, a man identified as Chad turned to the prediction market platform Kalshi, where he subsequently lost more than $12,000.
Kalshi responded to reports by stating the individual's story was “cherry-picked” and noted that the company provides various risk-management tools. However, the incident has highlighted a regulatory gap. Marlene Warner, CEO of the Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health, noted that prediction markets currently operate in a “very gray, unregulated space,” making it difficult to assess their specific risks compared to traditional sportsbooks.
