Pregnancy cholesterol levels often reflect natural physiological adaptations
Medical specialists emphasize the importance of monitoring cholesterol levels during pregnancy. While elevated cholesterol and triglycerides can cause concern for pregnant women, these changes are often natural physiological adaptations necessary for fetal development, placenta formation, and hormone production.
Lizanka Marinheiro, an endocrinologist at the Fernandes Figueira National Institute of Women, Children, and Adolescents (IFF/Fiocruz), advises that these metabolic shifts typically do not require medication. She stresses that high laboratory results should not cause panic or lead to self-medication. Instead, high-quality prenatal care is essential to distinguish between expected physiological changes and those that pose actual risks to maternal or fetal health. Clinical evaluations should consider a patient's medical history and risk factors rather than relying solely on laboratory tests.
