Pregnancy over 40: Medical risks and expert guidance
As more women choose to conceive after age 40, medical experts are providing guidance on the associated health considerations. Approximately five percent of pregnancies now occur in women aged 40 or older.
Prof. Dr. Karl Oliver Kagan, head of prenatal medicine at University Hospital Tübingen, notes that while risks increase with age, the majority of these pregnancies proceed well. However, specific medical challenges are more prevalent in this demographic.
For the child, the risk of chromosomal abnormalities, such as Trisomy 21, increases significantly; the risk is approximately 1 in 1000 for a 20-year-old compared to 1 in 80 for a 40-year-old. Additionally, the risk of miscarriage is higher for women over 40, estimated between 25 and 40 percent.
For the mother, increased risks include gestational diabetes, pregnancy-related hypertension, preeclampsia, and placental insufficiency. There is also a higher rate of cesarean sections. Experts recommend close medical supervision and individualized risk profiles to manage these factors.
