Pregnancy-related aversion to pets identified in survey
A 2025 survey of 1,077 women who were pregnant within the previous three years revealed that 15 percent of those with pets reported an aversion to dogs during pregnancy.
Experts suggest this phenomenon may be driven by hormonal changes that heighten the sense of smell, making the scent of animal fur or pet food unpleasant and potentially exacerbating nausea. Other contributing factors include fatigue, nausea, and increased sensitivity to daily stimuli.
This temporary aversion does not necessarily indicate a permanent change in the bond with the animal. Practical steps to manage the discomfort include regular ventilation and cleaning to reduce the presence of odors and hair in the home.
