Pregnancy-related health complications and their causes

Pregnancy causes significant hormonal, metabolic, and anatomical changes that can lead to various medical conditions. While many physiological changes reverse after childbirth, some issues may persist or manifest during gestation.

One common condition is abdominal diastasis, which occurs when the rectus abdominis muscles separate due to the stretching of the linea alba. This is frequently linked to pregnancy, as the growing uterus increases abdominal pressure and hormonal changes increase tissue elasticity. Other contributing factors include obesity, chronic constipation, and persistent coughing. Symptoms can include a visible bulge in the abdomen when sitting up or coughing, a sensation of weakness, and lumbar pain.

Gestational changes also increase the risk of biliary lithiasis (gallstones). Increased estrogen levels can saturate bile with cholesterol, while progesterone decreases gallbladder contractility, slowing emptying. This combination can lead to the formation of gallstones, often causing intense pain in the upper right abdomen or epigastrium, particularly after meals. Other potential pregnancy-related issues include umbilical or epigastric hernias, hemorrhoids, and anal fissures.
