Pregnant Asian Elephant Temi due August 2027 at Munich's Tierpark Hellabrunn

Asian elephant cow Temi at Munich's Tierpark Hellabrunn was confirmed pregnant in spring 2026 after blood and urine tests estimated a due date in August 2027.

The birth will be the first addition to the park's Asian elephant herd since the death of bull Otto in June 2025 from a herpes virus. The remaining five elephants have been reorganised and recent improvements in group dynamics have been noted.

Director Rasem Baban said the pregnancy is a major positive development for the herd, stressing its importance for immune health and population stability. Bavaria now houses six Asian elephants across Hellabrunn, the Augsburg Zoo and other facilities.
