Pregnant woman dies in Chittagong after domestic assault

Sifatun Nur, a 22-year-old pregnant woman, has died after being assaulted by members of her in-laws' family in Patiya, Chittagong. She passed away on Friday, October 23, after spending nine days in the intensive care unit at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

The incident reportedly began on October 14 during a dispute over the amount of homemade snacks brought to the house by the victim's mother. According to family allegations, the victim's mother-in-law, Rizia Begum, and two other female relatives, Rasheda Begum and Sumi Akter, physically assaulted the victim. Neighbors intervened to rescue the victim and her mother following the altercation.

The victim's father, Md. Nur, stated that Sifatun had been subjected to physical and mental abuse since her marriage five months ago. He further alleged that the family attempted to frame the incident as a suicide attempt to divert investigations. A written complaint had been filed with the Patiya police station against the three accused women immediately following the assault.
