Preikestolen: A guide to hiking Norway's Pulpit Rock

Preikestolen, also known as Pulpit Rock, is one of Norway’s most iconic hiking destinations. Located in Rogaland, approximately 40km east of Stavanger, the flat-topped cliff rises 604 metres above the Lysefjord.

The hike is officially rated as moderate, requiring a reasonable level of fitness to navigate uneven, rocky terrain and steep sections. The round trip covers approximately 8km with an elevation gain of roughly 500 metres, typically taking hikers about four hours to complete.

Due to its popularity, the trail can become very crowded, especially during the summer months. To avoid large crowds, visitors are encouraged to hike early in the morning or later in the afternoon. While the hike is accessible year-round, winter conditions require specialized equipment and more experience.
