Deloitte reports €40 bn European football revenue, Premier League losses rise 600%

Deloitte’s Annual Review of Football Finance shows that European football revenue surpassed €40 billion for the first time in the 2024‑25 season, an 8% increase from the previous year. The five biggest leagues – England, France, Spain, Germany and Italy – generated more than half of the total, with the Premier League alone accounting for about €8 billion.

Despite higher revenues, the Premier League’s combined pre‑tax losses jumped from £135 million in 2023‑24 to £948 million in 2024‑25, a 600% rise, driven by heavy transfer spending and a lack of one‑off sales. Net debt rose to £3.6 billion. In the Championship, losses grew 12% to £355 million, with wages consuming 96% of revenue.

Deloitte warned that growth is slowing. Expansion of UEFA and FIFA competitions has boosted incomes, but the market is approaching saturation. The firm called for diversified business models, stronger regulation and collective action among rights‑holders to ensure sustainable long‑term prosperity for European football.
