Premier League to increase transparency with referee audio and KMI Panel verdicts
The Premier League is introducing new transparency measures for the 2026/27 season, including the publication of full judgements from the Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel regarding referee and VAR decisions. Previously, these evaluations were shared only with clubs and officials, but they will now be made available to the public to provide clarity on officiating rationale.
In a significant technological expansion, broadcasters Sky Sports and TNT Sports will also be permitted to feature selected audio from RefCam—the cameras mounted on referees' heads. This will allow viewers to hear limited segments of on-field conversations between players and officials during near-live replays. The use of RefCam is expected to increase from 20 matches last season to approximately 45 this season.
These audio broadcasts will be subject to strict limitations. To comply with International Football Association Board (IFAB) rules, audio from Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviews will not be broadcast. The league and refereeing authorities continue to lobby IFAB for broader permissions regarding the live transmission of official communications.
