Premier League introduces four new rules for upcoming season

The English Premier League is introducing four new rules for the upcoming season aimed at reducing game delays and improving the application of VAR technology.

Key changes include a new protocol for medical assistance: players receiving treatment on the pitch must leave the field and cannot return for 60 seconds to discourage simulation and time-wasting. Additionally, referees will implement a five-second countdown if they determine a team is intentionally delaying play. For throw-ins, exceeding the time limit will result in the ball being awarded to the opponent, while delays during goal kicks will result in a corner kick for the opposing team.

Substitution rules are also being tightened; a player leaving the pitch has ten seconds to do so. If they exceed this limit, their replacement must wait one minute and the next stoppage before entering. Finally, VAR will now be able to intervene in situations involving a second yellow card, though it can only review a second yellow card that has already been shown, not one the referee failed to issue.
