Premier League introduces new rules for 2026/27 season

The Premier League has introduced several significant rule changes for the 2026/27 season aimed primarily at reducing time-wasting and increasing the amount of active play. These updates follow amendments to the Laws of the Game agreed upon by the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

Key changes include a five-second countdown for referees to use when players are deemed to be deliberately delaying restarts, such as goal kicks or throw-ins. If a player fails to restart within this window, possession may be awarded to the opposing team. Additionally, players receiving on-field medical treatment must now remain off the pitch for a minimum of one minute, doubling the previous 30-second requirement.

Other regulatory adjustments include a 10-second limit for substituted players to exit the pitch and a new disciplinary rule where deliberate hair-pulling without excessive force results in a yellow card rather than an automatic red. The league is also refining VAR protocols to reduce delays and improve the efficiency of semi-automated offside technology.
