Premier League officials address VAR controversies

PGMOL Chief Operating Officer Howard Webb has addressed recent officiating controversies in the Premier League through the “Match Officials Mic’d Up” series. The initiative aims to provide transparency by sharing conversations between on-pitch referees and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) hub at Stockley Park.

Webb discussed a controversial incident during the Newcastle United against Aston Villa match, where referee Jarred Gillett issued a yellow card to Sven Botman. Despite the challenge being described as a “high-end reckless challenge,” VAR official Stuart Attwell did not recommend a review for a potential red card.

In a separate development, VAR official Matt Donohue has returned to Premier League duty following a period away from top-flight fixtures. Donohue had previously been criticized for “tunnel vision” during a Manchester derby goal involving Erling Haaland.

Additionally, the Key Match Incidents (KMI) panel recently endorsed a VAR decision to send off Brighton defender Pascal Struijk, despite an independent regulatory commission later rescinding the suspension following a successful claim for wrongful dismissal.
