Premier League viewership rises 20% among young Americans
Soccer viewership in the United States is seeing a significant rise, particularly among younger demographics, following the impact of the World Cup. According to data from Nielsen Sports, viewership for the English Premier League among Americans aged 18-34 has increased by 20% this season.
Broadcasters NBC and USA Network have reported an average of approximately 500,000 viewers per Premier League match, a 3% increase from previous periods. Tottenham Hotspur has emerged as a major draw for the American audience; their match against Newcastle United on August 29 surpassed one million viewers, making it the most-watched Premier League game in the US this season.
The growth extends to domestic soccer as well, with Major League Soccer (MLS) seeing a 23% increase in interest among the 16-34 age group. Nielsen data also highlights a diversifying fanbase, noting that during the peak of World Cup interest in July, women accounted for 44% of the 87 million fans engaged with the sport.
