DEHP plasticizer exposure linked to autism and ADHD symptoms

A study published in the journal Med, utilizing data from the Australian Barwon Infant Study, has identified an association between prenatal exposure to di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and increased symptoms of autism and ADHD in children.

Researchers analyzed data from hundreds of mothers and infants, measuring DEHP metabolites in maternal urine during the 36th week of pregnancy. Following birth, umbilical cord blood was analyzed, revealing epigenetic changes—specifically DNA methylation—in a network of over 500 genes. These genetic alterations were linked to behavioral outcomes observed in children at ages two and four.

DEHP is a common plasticizer used to increase the flexibility of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It is frequently found in household items such as vinyl flooring, hoses, shower curtains, medical tubing, and food packaging. While the study suggests a strong correlation between DEHP exposure, epigenetic shifts, and neurodevelopmental symptoms, researchers noted that the observational nature of the study means a definitive causal relationship has not yet been proven.
