Prešov Hospital Construction Halted Pending Concrete Test Report

The Slovak Technical University’s expert institute carried out non‑destructive and core‑drilling examinations of the concrete structures at the new hospital in Prešov’s Sekčov district. Juraj Rybanský, the institute’s spokesman, said the final assessment has not yet been prepared or delivered to the Ministry of Defence, which is the client, adding that only preliminary reports have been submitted.

Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák announced at the end of April that building work was suspended because quality controls revealed problems with load‑bearing columns. In May he confirmed that irreparable columns will be removed and replaced, while the remaining elements will be repaired. After the previous contractor’s contract ended, a new group of firms took over the project and a public tender for the second construction phase has been launched. The police have opened a criminal investigation for endangering public safety linked to the construction defects.
