Abelardo de la Espriella donates first presidential salary to elderly homes
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has donated his first monthly salary to two elderly care homes in Quimbaya, Quindío: Consentidos de Jesús and Santo Domingo Savio. The donation follows a campaign promise in which De la Espriella pledged not to keep his official presidential salary, stating he would instead distribute it monthly to various social or charitable causes across different regions of the country.
The visit took place in a municipality still recovering from a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10. During the visit, the President announced that the national government will prioritize urgent remodeling and infrastructure improvements for the Santo Domingo Savio home, specifically focusing on the kitchen and basic services.
While the Presidency did not provide a full breakdown of the total distribution between the two institutions, one reported check for the Consentidos de Jesús home was for 15,979,307.80 pesos (approximately $5,200 USD). The President's total monthly salary is approximately 52 million pesos ($16,900 USD).
