Abelardo de la Espriella ends peace dialogues with ELN and criminal groups
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has officially terminated several peace dialogue processes and socio-legal spaces established by the previous administration under Gustavo Petro. The president signed resolutions to revoke the designation of government negotiators in talks with the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the Clan del Golfo (Ejército Gaitanista de Colombia). He also ended processes with various FARC dissident groups and the National Coordinator of the Bolivarian Army.
De la Espriella justified the decision by stating that the previous administration spent over 7,000 million Colombian pesos on negotiator fees while criminal organizations continued to strengthen and challenge the state. He emphasized a policy shift toward 'submission to justice or force,' asserting that criminal groups will no longer receive political status or concessions.
In a separate political development, former President Gustavo Petro has criticized the administration's handling of security and has supported calls for a civic strike in Nariño. Additionally, fact-checkers have identified that videos circulating on social media as recent protests against De la Espriella in Pasto were actually recorded in June 2026 following the presidential election.
