Dominican Republic: President Abinader announces infrastructure and social policies
President Luis Abinader has announced several key government initiatives in the Dominican Republic. Regarding social welfare, the President defended the use of permanent and temporary subsidies, noting that food assistance programs have doubled in both amount and coverage, now benefiting approximately 1.5 million households to mitigate the impact of international price fluctuations on essential goods.
In terms of infrastructure, the government has allocated approximately 480 million USD for various works funded by the Aerodom contract renegotiation. This includes the construction of a new bascule bridge over the Ozama River to replace the current floating structure, aimed at improving connectivity between Santo Domingo and Santo Domingo Este. Additionally, the Ministry of Public Works is implementing maintenance on the Gregorio Luperón bridge, which will include restrictions on heavy vehicle traffic.
Economic regulations have also been updated, with a new decree establishing state control over the 2026-2027 sugar harvest to ensure local supply and meet export commitments. Furthermore, the President has overseen the delivery of 2,200 property titles in Villa Altagracia and inaugurated new educational facilities in Santo Domingo Este.
