President András Baka vetoes Hungarian healthcare chamber legislation

President András Baka has vetoed and returned a legislative amendment concerning healthcare and professional chambers to the Hungarian Parliament for reconsideration. While the President expressed agreement with the law's primary goal of restoring and strengthening the professional autonomy of healthcare chambers, he criticized specific provisions that would legally restrict the freedom to elect chamber officials.

The President emphasized that such restrictions contradict the goal of chamber autonomy. He also noted that the mandatory re-entry into the Hungarian Medical Chamber must be managed with broad transitional provisions to prevent administrative hurdles from causing doctors to lose their right to practice or exit the healthcare system.

Health Minister Zsolt Hegedűs responded by stating that the observations from Sándor Palace will be seriously considered and prepared for discussion at the next meeting of the Parliament's Legislative Committee. Hegedűs welcomed the move, characterizing it as a functional demonstration of the principle of checks and balances within a democracy.
