President António José Seguro Praises Portuguese Farmers at National Agriculture Fair

President António José Seguro attended the National Agriculture Fair at the CNEMA venue in Santarém, spending nearly six hours visiting pavilions and meeting producers. He commended Portuguese farmers for their “courage and capacity of resistance” after recent storms in the central region, notably storm Kristin, and urged that they “not be left alone.”

Seguro highlighted the sector’s challenges, citing higher fuel and fertilizer costs linked to the war in the Middle East and the difficulty of competing with countries that receive larger subsidies – €500 million in Spain versus €20 million in Portugal. He praised the farmers’ technological capability, entrepreneurship and the high quality of Portuguese produce, noting that 95% of red berries are exported, generating about €400 million last year. The President also took part in a stamp‑issuing ceremony for the CTT and listened to individual appeals, including a Douro vintner requesting government support for vineyards.
