President António José Seguro promotes dual-use technology in Portugal

Portuguese President António José Seguro has advocated for the development of dual-use technologies that serve both national defense and civilian economic needs. During a visit to the REPMUS (Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Unmanned Systems) international exercise in Troia, the President emphasized that domestic technological capabilities can simultaneously protect the country and generate wealth.

The visit included demonstrations of unmanned systems in the Sado estuary, featuring projects from the armed forces, universities, research centers, and private companies. One notable example was the presentation of drones developed by the Portuguese company Beyond Vision, designed for both military and civil applications.

Admiral Jorge Nobre de Sousa, Chief of Staff of the Navy, highlighted the technical challenge of integrating diverse systems. He noted that Portugal is participating in the development of the NATO STANAG 4817 standard, which aims to establish protocols for interoperability between equipment from different manufacturers and nations.
