President Anura Kumara Dissanayake accuses two TV channels of stoking unrest

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has accused two unnamed television channels of manufacturing artificial unrest in Sri Lanka. Speaking at a National People’s Power rally in Badulla, the President alleged that these outlets are attempting to destabilize the government in response to ongoing crackdowns on corruption, drug trafficking, and organized crime.

Dissanayake claimed that individuals and criminal networks—which he stated have historically included politicians, underworld figures, and media elements—are attempting to obstruct government efforts to dismantle their interests. To challenge the credibility of one broadcaster, the President referenced a past allegation from a previous administration involving a relative of a channel owner allegedly receiving funds from the notorious drug trafficker Wele Suda.

The remarks have raised concerns regarding media freedom and the relationship between the administration and the press, with critics suggesting such accusations could have a chilling effect on independent journalism.
