President Bassirou Diomaye Faye visits Mali, pledges unwavering ECOWAS support
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, acting chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), arrived in Bamako on 28 July 2026 for a 24‑hour work and solidarity visit. He met with Mali’s transitional leader General Assimi Goïta, offered “indéfectible” (unwavering) support to Mali in its fight against terrorism and expressed condolences for the recent attacks that killed dozens of Malian soldiers.
The talks, the first by an ECOWAS president in a member of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), covered free movement of people and goods, joint infrastructure projects and enhanced counter‑terrorism cooperation.
