President Bajram Begaj has officially decreed May 9, 2027, as the date for Albania’s local government elections. The decision follows consultations with the Socialist Party, the Social Democratic Party, and the State Electoral Commissioner. The State Electoral Commissioner proposed this specific date to allow institutions more time for organizational preparations.

Several political entities declined to participate in the consultation process. The Democratic Party criticized the move, describing the consultations as “political theater” and alleging that the date was pre-determined by Prime Minister Edi Rama. Tedi Blushi of the Freedom Party also refused to participate, arguing that formal procedures are inappropriate while the country faces social unrest and student protests.

According to the Electoral Code, local elections must occur during the spring period between April 15 and May 15. Taulant Balla, head of the Socialist Parliamentary Group, noted the symbolic significance of the date as it coincides with Europe Day, linking the elections to Albania’s strategic goal of European Union integration.
