President Bola Tinubu Defends Governance Amid Criticism Over 'Abuja Gangster Chronicles

Chidi Amuta published an opinion piece titled “Abuja Gangster Chronicles” in THISDAY on July 26, labeling President Bola Tinubu’s administration as “gangsters.” The article’s authors argue that such personal attacks undermine democratic dialogue and cite Tinubu’s record since taking office in May 2023. They note that his government unified the foreign‑exchange market, ended multiple exchange rates, removed fuel subsidies and redirected the savings to infrastructure, student loans and social programmes. The administration has also attracted more than $30 billion in foreign‑direct‑investment pledges in oil and gas, manufacturing and technology, and inaugurated major road and rail projects, including the long‑delayed South‑East corridors. The authors quote Tinubu’s 2026 Democracy Day speech – “Criticise me, disagree with me, but never stop believing in Nigeria” – to stress the importance of robust public debate.

The pieces contend that while free speech is essential, criticism should focus on policy rather than personal insults, urging Nigerians to engage constructively with the government’s reforms.
