Mexico's GDP expands 2.1% year‑on‑year in Q2 2026
Mexico reported a 2.1 % increase in gross domestic product (GDP) year‑on‑year and a 1.5 % rise quarter‑on‑quarter for the second quarter of 2026, the strongest quarterly performance since 2020. The growth was led by the primary sector – agriculture, livestock, fishing and mining – which posted a 3.3 % quarterly gain, and by services, which added 1.5 % quarterly. Secondary industries, including manufacturing and construction, contributed modestly.
President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted the results as “good news” and said that public‑works projects and the “Vivienda para el Bienestar” housing programme are expected to further boost the economy in the second half of the year. Analysts noted that the expansion also reflected strong export growth, especially to the United States, and a temporary stimulus from the FIFA World Cup, estimated to add about 0.1 % to total GDP. Nevertheless, they warned that inflation, external trade tensions and global economic uncertainty remain challenges for sustaining the momentum.
