Claudia Sheinbaum reports 2.1% GDP growth and outlines new policy agenda
Mexico’s economy expanded 2.1% year‑on‑year and 1.5% quarter‑on‑quarter in the second quarter of 2026, driven mainly by the primary sector (agriculture and mining) and the services sector. President Claudia Sheinbaum said the growth will be reinforced in the second half of the year by public‑works projects and the Vivienda para el Bienestar housing programme.
Sheinbaum responded to U.S. Congressman Carlos Giménez, urging that Mexico not be used as a “piñata” in the U.S. election campaign and reaffirmed Mexico’s humanitarian aid to Cuba. She also clarified that the proposed audience‑rights guidelines would impose administrative duties, such as appointing a defender of audiences, and would not sanction media for content.
The government announced a $649 million investment by KIA to expand an electric‑vehicle plant in Pesquería, creating 500 jobs. In Oaxaca, Sheinbaum launched the Milpateca programme, allocating 1.7 billion pesos to ten communities to protect native maize. A joint security operation detained two suspects, including a leader of the Jalisco New Generation cartel.
