President Dissanayake directs improvements to migrant welfare and mineral exploration

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has issued directives to streamline support for overseas workers and accelerate the development of the nation's mineral sector.

During a meeting with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), the President called for the removal of administrative delays in delivering welfare benefits to citizens working abroad. He emphasized that these workers are vital to the national economy through remittances and urged officials to improve the collection of data on overseas nationals to better identify their needs. Discussions included housing programs, financial loan schemes, and duty-free concessions.

In a separate focus on economic development, President Dissanayake called for faster identification of mineral resources and increased efforts to attract foreign investment. The administration is reviewing exploration progress in areas such as Kahatagaha and Eppawala, with an emphasis on ensuring geological reports meet international standards. Additionally, officials are working on a policy framework to regulate gem mining and reduce fraud in gem exports, alongside the construction of a new Gem and Jewellery Centre.
