Cairo greening project ordered by President al-Sisi
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has ordered a new initiative to ‘green Cairo,’ aiming to convert vacated urban spaces into green areas. The directive was issued during a meeting with senior officials, including the Minister of Religious Endowments and the Governor of Cairo, to discuss urban planning and heritage preservation.
The project coincides with ongoing efforts to restore and revitalize Cairo’s historical, Islamic, and Khedival landmarks. Officials stated that the goal is to develop integrated tourist routes connecting various heritage sites, effectively turning the heart of the capital into an open-air destination to boost tourism.
In addition to the greening project, the Egyptian Endowments Authority is reviewing plans to develop its property assets and improve the documentation of endowments. Experts have noted that successful large-scale urban greening requires long-term planning and centralized oversight to avoid the fragmentation seen in previous years.
