Istanbul to launch 15,000 social rental homes for low‑income families

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced a new social‑rental housing programme for Istanbul that will provide 15,000 units to low‑income households. Applications will be opened soon, with eligibility limited to families that do not own a home and meet income thresholds; special quotas are set for civil servants, retirees, disabled persons and those displaced by urban‑renewal projects.

The allocation will be decided by a public lottery (kura) held in September, after which successful applicants will sign three‑year leases at rents roughly half the market rate. The programme is part of a broader effort to strengthen Istanbul’s building stock, described by Erdoğan as a matter of national security, and follows the “Yarısı Bizden” campaign that has already transformed hundreds of thousands of units. In the same speech, the government also announced higher credit limits for small businesses and artisans.
