President Erdoğan opens Kitaba Vefa book restoration exhibition
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the opening of the ‘Kitaba Vefa: Cilt Sanatı ve Restorasyon Sergisi’ (Loyalty to the Book: Art of Binding and Restoration Exhibition) at the Tophane-i Amire Culture and Art Center in Istanbul. The event was organized by Eksim Holding to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
During his speech, Erdoğan emphasized the vital connection between a nation's history and its cultural heritage, stating, “Those who are indifferent to their past cannot build a future.” He criticized past attempts to sever Turkey's cultural roots, specifically citing coup periods as times when “the most shameful book massacres” occurred. He noted that during the February 28 process, 4,500 works, including 500 from Sultan Abdulhamid II's personal library, were discarded by authorities.
The exhibition features 40 rare works restored by Eksim Holding. As a commemorative gesture, Eksim Holding Chairman Ebubekir Tivnikli presented Erdoğan with a 500-year-old manuscript containing hadiths from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, which had been restored by a master bookbinder.
