President Fujimori proposes ideological overhaul of school textbooks
Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori has announced a plan to reform school textbooks, stating that the upcoming materials will undergo an "ideological purge" to remove specific viewpoints. During a distribution event for school supplies in remote areas, Fujimori declared that the decision to modify the texts is irreversible, aiming to deliver new versions by the 2027 school year.
The President did not provide specific examples of ideological content currently present in the books. Her proposal has sparked debate, with critics such as journalist Rosa María Palacios questioning the justification for such censorship and suggesting that educational focus should instead prioritize issues like sexual violence, comprehensive sexual education, and the impact of artificial intelligence on learning.
Educator León Trahtemberg has also weighed in, arguing that the attempt to "cleanse" textbooks of ideology undermines the development of critical thinking. Additionally, Trahtemberg addressed new government guidelines regarding school discipline, expressing support for restoring the authority of school directors to expel students while cautioning against ministerial oversight that might undermine a director's final decision.
