President Jennifer Simons travels to UN General Assembly

Suriname President Jennifer Simons has departed for the United States to participate in the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, held from September 21 to 24. The assembly's theme is ‘Restoring trust, managing the transition: a UN that delivers results for everyone’.

In her upcoming address, President Simons intends to emphasize the importance of the international rule of law. She noted that because Suriname lacks significant economic or military power, the nation relies heavily on international regulations to protect its interests. She also plans to advocate for the peaceful resolution of regional and international conflicts and address the global climate crisis.

During the summit, the President is expected to engage in several bilateral discussions. These include meetings with officials from the Netherlands, specifically regarding the migration of Surinamese labor to the Netherlands, and talks with the Inter-American Development Bank concerning Artificial Intelligence.
