President John Mahama heads to Jamaica to deepen Ghana‑Caribbean ties and push reparations

President John Dramani Mahama will make a four‑day official visit to Kingston, Jamaica from 2 to 5 August 2026. The trip aims to strengthen Ghana’s long‑standing relationship with Jamaica and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and to advance the global campaign for reparations for the transatlantic slave trade.

Key events include a high‑level Reparations Dialogue at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus with Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice‑Chancellor of UWI and Chairman of the CARICOM Reparations Commission. Mahama will also lay a wreath at the shrine of National Hero Marcus Garvey, visit the Ghanaian Village Houses at Seville Heritage Park, and attend a cultural event marking Jamaica’s 64th Independence Anniversary. The programme features bilateral talks on trade, culture and South‑South cooperation, a speech to Jamaica’s Parliament, a Trade and Investment Dialogue, a tour of the Kingston Freeport, a courtesy call from opposition leader Mark Golding, and a state dinner hosted by Governor‑General Sir Patrick Allen.

The visit follows Ghana’s recent support to Jamaica after a major natural disaster and underscores the shared historical and cultural ties between Africa and its diaspora.
