Jokowi urges PSI to strengthen grassroots structure ahead of 2029 election
President Joko Widodo attended a regional coordination meeting (Rakorda) of the Democratic Party of Indonesia (DPD PSI) in Kupang, Nusa Tenggara Timur on 1 August 2026. He told PSI cadres that party structures must be functional and active at the village level and polling stations, warning that a mere formal organization is useless. Jokowi said PSI has a large, undisclosed target for the 2029 election beyond simply winning seats in the parliament.
He highlighted PSI’s growth in the region, noting the party held 11 DPRD seats in NTT in 2019 and increased to 34 after the 2024 election. He offered PSI members the option to seek assistance in Solo if internal problems could not be resolved through the party hierarchy.
During the same visit Jokowi was ceremonially crowned “Raja Timor” by local traditional leaders, a cultural honor attended by thousands. Political analyst Adi Prayitno interpreted Jokowi’s heightened political activity as a move to keep his son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, relevant in the lead‑up to the 2029 national elections.
