President José Antonio Kast attends first Te Deum Ecuménico
President José Antonio Kast attended his first Te Deum Ecuménico as head of state during the Fiestas Patrias commemorations. The ceremony, presided over by Santiago Archbishop Cardinal Fernando Chomali, featured a speech addressing critical national issues including corruption, violence, security, and the need for national unity.
Following the service, President Kast called for hope and unity, stating, “Let us have hope that Chile can stand up again and again.” He encouraged citizens to enjoy time with their families and emphasized the importance of caring for children, the elderly, and those who are alone. Kast also acknowledged the work of the Armed Forces and police during a traditional ceremony at La Moneda Palace.
Political reactions to the Archbishop's message varied. Government officials, including Minister María Jesús Wulf, noted that the administration is working to address demographic challenges such as declining birth rates. Other political figures, including Deputy Jorge Alessandri and Senator Rojo Edwards, suggested the Archbishop's call for the common good and focus on the vulnerable should serve as an inspiration for the political class.
