President José Antonio Kast to attend O’Higgins anniversary in Chillán Viejo
President José Antonio Kast is scheduled to attend the 248th anniversary of Bernardo O’Higgins' birth in Chillán Viejo on August 20. The upcoming visit follows a dispute between the central government and local authorities regarding the length of the traditional citizen parade. While the central government initially sought to shorten the event, pressure from Mayor Jorge del Pozo ensured the parade would maintain its community-focused character.
The visit is viewed as a significant opportunity for the Ñuble region to engage with the national agenda. Regional Presidential Delegate Diego Sepúlveda noted that expectations are high for the President to address regional priorities, including employment, security, and major infrastructure projects.
In related commemorations, the Chilean Army has highlighted the historical legacy of O’Higgins, emphasizing values such as resilience, prudence, and service. Military representatives have noted that O’Higgins’ life serves as a foundational reference for the construction of the Republic and the importance of historical education for new generations.
