Latin American leaders attend 81st UN General Assembly
Latin American leaders are convening in New York for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Chilean President José Antonio Kast is set to deliver his first address as head of state, focusing on security, international trade, and multilateralism. A key priority for Chile is combating transnational organized crime through the ‘Santiago Commitment’ and promoting Valparaíso as the potential headquarters for the High Seas Treaty (BBNJ) secretariat.
In addition to Chile's diplomatic efforts, Osvaldo Urrutia, Chile's Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, has been elected president of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI38).
Other regional developments include Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa attending the assembly to strengthen investment and security ties, while Guatemala will be represented by Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martínez, as President Bernardo Arévalo will not attend the session.
