Chile President Kast appoints former President Eduardo Frei as special ambassador

President José Antonio Kast named former president Eduardo Frei Ruiz‑Tagle as Chile’s ambassador in a Special Mission, serving ad honorem. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the appointment leverages Frei’s “outstanding public career, broad international experience and permanent commitment to Chile’s higher interests.” In the role, Frei will represent Chile at seminars, multilateral meetings, official visits and other high‑level international activities to strengthen bilateral and multilateral relations. The ministry added that he “has played a fundamental role in strengthening Chile’s international insertion, contributing decisively to the country’s positioning as a serious, reliable and open actor.” Frei previously held the same diplomatic post from 2014 to 2022 under the administrations of Michelle Bachelet and Sebastián Piñera, leaving the position after Gabriel Boric took office. The new designation is presented as a strategic move to project Chile’s foreign policy with a figure of high political stature.
