President Boakai addresses UN reforms and economic growth

Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has engaged in several high-profile activities during his recent international and domestic engagements. At the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Boakai advocated for structural reforms to the global financial system to provide developing nations with more affordable financing and greater decision-making power. He also called for the United Nations Security Council to grant Africa at least two permanent seats to reflect the continent's demographic and geopolitical importance.

Domestically and within the diaspora, Boakai defended his administration's economic record, noting that government revenue surpassed US$1 billion in September 2026. He urged the Liberian diaspora to invest their expertise and capital into the nation's development under the ARREST Agenda. Additionally, he visited the Liberia International Ship and Corporate Registry office in Virginia, becoming the first sitting president to do so.

However, the President's recent remarks have drawn criticism. Tiawan Saye Gongloe, a lawyer and former president of the Liberia National Bar Association, rebuked a joke made by Boakai stating that a “good lawyer knows the judge.” Gongloe argued that such comments could undermine public confidence in judicial independence and send an unethical message to law students and young legal professionals.
