President Julius Maada Bio addresses UN General Assembly on peacebuilding
President Julius Maada Bio addressed the 81st United Nations General Assembly, highlighting Sierra Leone’s transition from civil war to peace as a testament to the value of international cooperation. He noted that nearly 25 years after the end of the conflict, peace has been sustained through the rebuilding of communities and the restoration of public confidence in national institutions.
President Bio emphasized that Sierra Leone’s experience with the UN during disarmament and peacebuilding has shaped its approach to multilateralism. During its 2024–2025 tenure on the Security Council, the nation acted as a mediator, addressed historical injustices against Africa, and co-drafted Resolution 2807 regarding Youth, Peace, and Security. He reaffirmed the country’s commitment to international law, mediation, and the rights of women and girls.
