President Bio proposes global peace prevention plan in Geneva
Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio has proposed a new framework for peace in Africa during high-level engagements in Geneva, Switzerland. Speaking at the Geneva Peace Forum and the Geneva Graduate Institute, Bio advocated for a shift from post-conflict reconstruction to proactive prevention. He proposed a “Geneva Commitment to Prevention” and a Regional Prevention Compact, which would use early-warning indicators to trigger mediation before crises escalate.
Bio outlined five key priorities for lasting peace: strengthening democratic institutions, preventive diplomacy, regional cooperation, people-centered security, and sustainable financing for African-led peace operations. He emphasized that the absence of war does not guarantee peace and called for greater national ownership and accountability to sustain stability.
In a separate development in Abuja, Nigeria, former Sierra Leonean Vice-President Samuel Sam-Sumana expressed gratitude to Nigeria for its military and civilian sacrifices during Sierra Leone’s civil war. Sam-Sumana described Nigeria as a “big brother” in West Africa, noting that the country's stability is vital to the entire subregion.
