Chilean President Kast faces pressure over 18-O anniversary stance

As Chile approaches the seventh anniversary of the October 18, 2019, social unrest, President José Antonio Kast faces internal pressure regarding his administration's stance on the commemoration. Kast has opted not to hold an official government act, instead focusing his rhetoric on a “look toward the future” and condemning the violence of the 2019 period.

This decision has drawn sharp criticism from within his own political sphere. Johannes Kaiser, a prominent figure from the Libertarian National Party, criticized the President's silence as a “bad political decision,” comparing his avoidance of the topic to a scene from Matrix. Meanwhile, deputies from the Republican Party have called for increased security measures in major cities to prevent potential vandalism or disturbances during the anniversary.

Government officials, including Minister José García Ruminot, have defended the decision not to hold an official event, stating that the unrest represented a setback for the country rather than progress. In response to the political tension, the Centro de Estudios Públicos (CEP) announced plans to convene various research centers to analyze the crisis and the different historical interpretations surrounding the event.
