President Laura Fernández addresses tension between Executive and Judicial powers

President Laura Fernández has addressed the growing tension between the Executive and Judicial branches during a national broadcast. She acknowledged a dispute of visions between the two powers but framed the conflict as an urgent necessity to protect citizen safety and restore order in local neighborhoods.

To resolve the crisis, Fernández announced she will convene the heads of all state powers to establish a critical roadmap. This plan aims to include specific goals, assigned responsibilities, and defined compliance deadlines. To ensure transparency, the President committed to providing quarterly updates to the nation regarding the progress and obligations met by each institution.

The friction follows mutual criticisms, with Fernández suggesting that while the Executive has strengthened police and prison systems, the Judiciary has remained in a “comfort zone,” prioritizing appointments over accountability. She also rejected accusations of a “budgetary coup,” maintaining that fiscal cuts are necessary across all state sectors.
